Backyard Humanitarian is an all volunteer group,  founded in Stamford, CT by Angela Margaret Malizia in 2010. With the support & encouragement of family, friends, colleagues, mentors & the co-founding BH management team, BH had their first meetups with just a few people. Initial projects included  a coat drive and soup kitchen volunteering. It started as a small group of caring people believing in the mission, including  local businesses, organizations, schools etc who joined in, became Backyard Humanitarians & inspired even more caring people to start this movement of kindness that continues.  The BH Team has grown to more than 1,000 volunteers who have completed more than 250 volunteering projects in multiple communities.
Angela holds a Bachelor's Degree in Business from Berkeley College, a Master's Degree in Clinical Nutrition from the University of Bridgeport. She is a certified Yoga Teacher, including focused certifications in Hatha Yoga, Restorative Yoga, Kid's Yoga and trauma informed Mindful Yoga Therapy.  She was an American Red Cross Disaster Action Team volunteer, responding to fire in her hometown as well as national hurricanes and emergencies in CT, NY, MS, TX and FL. Angela is currently a Senior SAF Regional Program Specialist/Reservist on the National HQ American Red Cross Service to the Armed Forces Team deploying to conflict areas. She has deployed to the Middle East w/Team 42 station at Camp Arifjan Kuwait and is currently deployed to Europe as a site lead for Poland for Team 47 stationed in Poznan, Poland.

"Backyard Humanitarian is an ever growing, evolving team focused on local volunteering & unconditional kindness.   We realize that any one of us can experience challenges or trauma at any point in life and it's not always visible.  The effort to be aware of this and be compassionate without judgement can help build new bridges and strengthen existing bonds between people. It can make a healing difference for those who need help as well as for those who offer help.   If we want the world to be a better place, where better to begin than right here in our own backyard? -Angela Margaret Malizia
