Backyard Humanitarian was founded in Stamford, CT by Angela Margaret Malizia in 2010 while working as a Finance Manager and volunteering for the American Red Cross Disaster Action Team. With the support & encouragement of family, friends, colleagues, mentors & the co-founding BH management team, BH had their first meetups. Projects were a coat drive, a toiletries drive and soup kitchen volunteering. The BH Team has now grown to more than 1,000 volunteers who have completed more than 250 volunteering projects in multiple communities. It began with a few caring people believing in the mission including local businesses and schools who joined in, became Backyard Humanitarians & inspired even more caring people to start this movement of kindness that continues. Angela has a Bachelor's Degree in Business and a Master's Degree in Clinical Nutrition. She is a Personal Fitness Instructor, Kid's Yoga Teacher and Trauma Informed Yoga Teacher. She is a Senior Regional Program Specialist/Reservist on the American Red Cross Service to the Armed Forces Team, deploying with the military to conflict areas.
"Backyard Humanitarian is an ever growing & evolving team focused on volunteering & kindness. We recognize that any one of us can experience challenging times or trauma at any point in life. This effort can make a healing difference for those who need help and also those who offer help. If we want the world to be a better place, where better to focus that effort than right here in our own backyard. -Angela Margaret Malizia
