Below are answers for some frequently asked questions. If you have a question, please let us know. This group is for everyone and anyone who wants to help. We understand that any one can face hardships and be in need at any time. Those who help and those who need help are not separate, we are one. There is no minimum required amount of time for volunteering. All are encouraged to share even one moment, one idea or join one project. We do not compete with any other organizations for volunteers or resources. We partner with, support and assist when needed. We encourage all kinds of volunteering and service in the community. Our volunteers dedicate their time to many worthy causes. We help to develop and support leaders. We work to plan projects ahead of time, but we also understand the need for help can't always be planned. There are often last minute opportunities to help make a difference.
Backyard Humanitarian was created and founded by Stamford, CT native Angela Margaret Malizia, made official in the summer of 2010. BH is an evolving effort to assist those in need and bring caring people together to support more volunteering, teamwork, connection, compassionate action, empathy and kindness in the community.
Angela was taught early on about the importance of being helpful to others and the value of teamwork from her parents, siblings, family, friends, teachers, coaches, teammates and colleagues. She often organized volunteer projects with friends & coworkers. When she became an American Red Cross volunteer, she would train and learn from mentors over the years - as an emergency communications liaison for deployed military members and their families and a disaster action team leader supporting victims and first responders on scene after fires and other emergencies. She deployed nationally where she bonded with and was inspired by disaster relief volunteers from all over the country. She took heart, that during a crisis, even when the need for shelter, food & financial assistance was great, the deepest gratitude from those who faced disasters was mainly for the kind, caring support they received. She believed more of that would matter, a lot. She felt more needed to be and could be done. It became her mission. Reaching out to like minded friends she knew she wasn't the only one. With their support & encouragement, research and prayers, she knew what to do. Backyard Humanitarian was born.
