  • STAMFORD, CT - 2014 marks the Backyard Humanitarian 5th Annual Winter Coat Drive with Mario's Cleaners. “Be Cool, Keep Someone Warm”.
History:
  • The coat drive began in 2010 with Mario's Cleaners and a small group of friends and families who collected and distributed coats from their cars. This coat drive grew each year. In 2013 the Backyard Humanitarian Coat Drive expanded to the New Haven, CT and Shoreline areas of CT. In 2014, New Bern, NC joined in. Our team for the coat drive is called BH Team Chill.
  • 2014 - This year the official coat drives are in Stamford, CT and New Bern, NC. In 2014, Frank Mercede & Sons joined our efforts to support and donate space and we had a coat drive headquarters for the first time.

About:
The Backyard Humanitarian Winter Coat Drive is a 100% volunteer effort from start to finish. Backyard Humanitarians volunteer their time to coordinate volunteers and the entire collection process. We request donations of warm, clean, new or gently used coats from the community to be given directly to those in need in each community. In Stamford, CT Mario's Professional Cleaners donates the entire cost of the cleaning/processing of the coats. Frank Mercedes & Sons donated the office space for our Headquarters 2014.

Collection:
In each location, with the help and support of Backyard Humanitarian, local individuals, groups, schools, sports teams, businesses, etc., set up collections. Backyard Humanitarians collect from these locations, processes as needed and then gives directly to those in need in the community.

In Stamford, Backyard Humanitarians sort and mark in the coats at Headquarters then deliver to Mario's Cleaners. Mario's Cleaners cleans the coats and returns to Backyard Humanitarians who then process and fulfill requests from local agencies such as; local families, shelters, veterans hospital, senior centers, soup kitchen and anyone else in need.
  • In New Bern, Backyard Humanitarians and friends can bring coats directly to the drop off locations. All coats will go directly to people in need in New Bern via RC delivered by BH volunteers..
Giving:
  • There are no special requirements to get a coat.  People and/or agencies simply ask. We will give every coat that is donated. All coats are given free of charge.

This coat drive is a community effort and is made possible by the warm caring hearts and generosity of people, who want to be Backyard Humanitarians and help in their own communities.

HOLIDAY GIFT DRIVE WITH STAMFORD FIREFIGHTERS 2014

Join us to spread the word, donate toys and volunteer to wrap!

If this sounds like something you are interested in, email us to join our team.

We are helping to support the Stamford Firefighters Toy Drive this year. Kids in need will get their toys delivered by firefighters. Backyard Humanitarian elves will help with the wrapping of these toys and help in getting the word out to our community for toy/gift donations.

In order to get to that point we need to get the toys donated, so please help us spread the word to friends and families so they know how to donate toys and where to drop them off.

Donate a toy or something for the older kids! It's a great feeling. You will not only help bring joy to a child but you will get to visit our Stamford Firefighters, say hello and thank them for the life saving work they do every day in Stamford.
